Optic nerve sheath diameter ultrasound to screen for elevated intracranial pressure in the intensive care unit - what is known and what is new?
Speaker: Jakob Pansell, Ph.D student and critical care and prehospital care specialist nurse
Abstract: Sonographic measurement of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has shown great potential as a non-invasive intracranial pressure (ICP) estimate. This is a presentation of what is known about the ONSD-ICP association and recent studies that challenge some of the inherent assumptions in expert opinion in the field. Among the new findings, we will cover sex differences in characteristics of the optic nerve sheath images and how this relates to diagnostic accuracy.
We will also discuss new findings on the mechanism behind the ONSD-ICP association.
