Flower finished his PhD in 1974 from the group of Sir John Vane (Nobel Laureate in 1982), a fruitful collaboration that continued over many years to explore the mechanism of anti-inflammatory drugs. He is an expert in physiology and pharmacology, and he has published many key papers in the field of inflammation.
Flower co-founded the William Harvey Research Institute in 1990, he was a Principal Fellow of the Wellcome trust during 1994-2007, and he was the president of the British Pharmacological Society during 2000-2003.
