Lectures and seminars CTMR Bug Corner: Nadja Patenge and Moritz Jansson (University Medicine Rostock) - "Novel therapeutic approaches to combat streptococcal infections”

Nadja Patenge
Affiliation: Nadja Patenge, Biologist, Researcher at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Virology, and Hygiene, University Medicine Rostock.

Moritz Jansson
Affiliation: Moritz Jansson, assistant physician, Researcher at the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Virology, and Hygiene, University Medicine Rostock.

Nadja's group is working on peptide nucleic acid (PNA) antisense technology. They are currently focusing on optimizing the antimicrobial effect of antisense PNAs on streptococci by improving bacterial PNA uptake and identifying suitable target sequences. Other important topics for them are off-target effects of PNA treatment on the bacterial transcriptome and the dynamics of resistance development in comparison to conventional antibiotics treatment.

Moritz’s group investigates the potential of in vitro transcribed (IVT)-mRNA for the use of actively combating bacterial infections. With nature providing us with an exhaustless array of peptide and protein based antibacterial molecules mRNA platforms have the potential to deliver the “building instructions” of these molecules to human cells to fight bacterial pathogens. So far their work has been focused on a proof of concept study using mRNA-encoded bacteriophage endolysins with activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae in an in vitro model.
