Welcome to a presentation in the seminar series hosted by the Centre for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics. Competing risks is a topic that is often highlighted as a challenge in observational studies that use survival analysis, and questions that relate to competing risk are often raised by reviewers. In this lunch seminar Dr. Eloranta will give a gentle introduction to the topic and discuss the most frequent and fundamental questions related to it.

Welcome!

"Competing risks in survival analyses – what is it and when does it matter?"

with Dr. Sandra Eloranta, Division of Clinical Epidemiology, Department of Medicine, and Project Clinicum, Karolinska Institutet.

Competing risks is a topic that is often highlighted as a challenge in observational studies that use survival analysis, and questions that relate to competing risk are often raised be reviewers. This lunch seminar will give a gentle introduction to the topic and discuss:

  • What are competing risks?
  • How can they complicate the statistical analyses?
  • What type of research questions warrant the use of special methods to deal with competing risks?
  • How does the interpretation of competing risks analyses differ from that of classical survival analyses (e.g. Kaplan-Meier analysis or Cox regression)?

The lecture will focus on central concepts that are relevant for the theory of competing risks (rather than the mathematical details that forms the basis for the statistical theory).

The seminar will be held in the building Neo in Flemingsberg, but also on Zoom. Before the seminar, a limited number of sandwiches and drinks will be served on a “First come – first served” basis starting at 12:00.

Show up early and network!
