Title

Dynamics of excess mortality during the Covid-19 pandemic in the Netherlands – impact of vaccination and infection analysed through a multi-state model incorporating relative survival

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to excess mortality, with reported excess deaths higher than those directly attributed to Covid-19. Evaluating pandemic-related mortality should not rely solely on cause-of-death data. We studied the impact of infection with and vaccination against Covid-19 on excess mortality in persons aged 65 or older in the Netherlands during 2020-2021 by incorporating relative survival modelling into an extensive multi-state model that accounts for vaccination, infection, and death. We applied this model to nationwide data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

This seminar will show the utility of relative survival methods beyond the traditional context of modeling cancer patient excess mortality, offering perspectives on their broader application to understanding complex mortality patterns.
