Seven researchers at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics have been granted project funds from the Swedish Research Council. Together the department receives SEK 33.1 million.

Professors Lars Farde and Kjell Fuxe are awarded the Arvid Carlsson Foundation's Major Prize for Outstanding Research in the Spirit of Arvid Carlsson. The prizes consist of diplomas and research grants amounting to SEK 700,000.

Konstantinos Meletis, Professor in the Department of Neuroscience, has been awarded a grant of approximately 1.73 million US dollars for three years from the Aligning Sciences Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) initiative.

On Thursday the 28th of October the Swedish Research Council announced this year's grant decision in the fields of medicine and health. The total amount of grants awarded is SEK 1,1 billion and KI's researchers are awarded SEK 500 900 000.

The Swedish Research Council and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has decided on the applications of individualised diagnostics and prevention to be awarded grants within the call Project grant for cross-disciplinary collaboration between China and Sweden. All projects are contucted at KI and by KI researchers.

Per Svenningsson has been awarded a grant of approximately 1.86 million US dollar for three years, from the Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s (ASAP) initiative for an ambitious, multidisciplinary effort to study how abnormal protein aggregates may spread from the gut to the brain to drive the early stages of Parkinson’s disease. The total award is 8.9 million US dollar grant for three years.

Researchers at the Aging Research Center (ARC) have been awarded several substantial grants from Forte's annual open call for proposals. Out of the 32 projects, programmes and networks that received funding at KI, five were awarded to ARC. The aim is to analyse enabling and contributing to an in-depth knowledge in research areas or issues.

Dr. Fang Fang, Professor at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) at Karolinska Institutet, has been awarded a grant of approximately 1.5 million US dollar for three years, from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), USA.

KI researchers Johan Lundin and Gunilla Karlsson-Hedestam receives research grant from the Erling-Persson Family Foundation, that supports projects in science, education, and development of children and young people.

Three KI researchers have been awarded SSMF’s Large Grant, one of Sweden’s biggest grants for medical research. The researchers are allocated grants for four years of part- or full-time research with the goal of establishing an independent scientific career. This year the foundation received 153 applications, of which eight were granted.

Davide Vetrano has received a 2 MSEK Junior Scholar Grant from the Strategic Research Area in Epidemiology and Biostatistics (SFOepi) for the project “Biomarker signatures of the multimorbidity-frailty continuum: in pursuit of personalized medicine for older adults.”

Several substantial appropriations have been awarded to KI through the Swedish Research Council’s national research infrastructure initiative.
The Swedish Twin Registry (STR), Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden (CBCS) and the National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR) were all awarded funding through the Research Council.

We are happy to announce that the National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR) received the renewal of the research infrastructure grant by the Swedish Research Council (VR) for the period 2023-2028.

Docent Sara Hägg, together with a multidisciplinary team of KI researcher, has been awarded an NIH Prime Grant for their research on repurposing drugs for the primary prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease. The grant is for three years with the option to apply for additional two years.

Assistant Professor Rongrong Fan at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition is among the 4 grantees in Europe who have received 5 million DKK for 5 years from the EFSD / Novo Nordisk Future Leaders Award program in 2021. This highly competitive grant supports young and promising researchers of excellence who wish to further develop their career in Europe to investigate the mechanisms of diabetes.

Congratulations to Marco Gerling, Andreas Lennartsson and Staffan Strömblad at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition (BioNut), who have received the Translational Seed Funding grant / Blue Sky Research grant from Cancer Research KI.

Professor Per Svenningsson at Karolinska Institutet receives funding for a five-year research project of 38 million SEK from Nordstjernan Holding AB and the Axel Johnson Group. The investment goes to fundamental research on the onset of Parkinson's disease and to clinical studies to improve treatment and slow down the course of the disease.

This year, The Swedish Brain Foundation will distribute SEK 106 million in research grants. Karolinska Institutet is awarded 42% of these and includes seven researchers at the Department of Neurobiology, Health Sciences and Society (NVS) as recipients.

Roman Zubarev has been funded within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie action “Innovative Training Networks”. The project aims to train a new generation of scientists in exploiting the concept of allostery in drug design.

Congratulations to the researchers at BioNut who received funding from CIMED for 2022-2024. A total of 4.5 million SEK awarded.

The Department of medical biochemistry and biophysics (MBB) receives research grants of SEK 9.8 million from the Swedish Brain Foundation. Five projects at the department receive grants from the non-profit foundation.

StratNeuro awards a total of 18 MSEK to six Collaborative Neuroscience Research Projects. 41 letters of intent from across 12 departments were received, of which the top ranking 1/3 (ranging seven departments at KI), were invited to submit full proposals for a second round of evaluation by an external evaluator panel.

Two research environments from Karolinska Institutet have been awarded grants for follow-up studies of COVID-19 vaccines. In total, six research environments from five universities will share SEK 100 million from the Swedish Research Council. The research environments are based on collaborations between different regions, and will focus on different aspects of health and medical care needs.

Thirteen KI researchers have received funding from the Heart-Lung Foundation for their research on the new coronavirus. The grants total SEK 6.5 million, with approximately 40 per cent of the grants being distributed by the Heart-Lung Foundation (2021). The focus of the research is on the aftermath of COVID-19 where the disease has caused late complications on the heart, vessels and lungs. A total of SEK 15.7 million was distributed to 30 research projects at six different universities.

StratNeuro has awarded SEK 1,000,000 in start-up grant to Kristoffer Månsson, who was granted a 2020 faculty-funded Assistant Professor (biträdande lektor) position.

Researchers from the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet, together with researchers from Uppsala University, the University of Eastern Finland and King's College London, have been awarded a research grant from Foundation for Research in Rheumatology (Foreum), for their project entitled "Autoimmune and molecular mechanisms for pain and fatigue in fibromyalgia".

Last autumn, KI announced an new internal funding for work on sustainable development initiatives. After fierce competition, five applications have now been selected to share one million SEK.

Francesca Castoldi, at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition (BioNut), KI, has been awarded a research grant of 300 000 SEK from the Alex and Eva Wallström Foundation for scientific research and education.

Santhilal Subhash at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition has received a three-year grant for post-doctoral studies in medical science from the Swedish Society for Medical Research.

Igor Adameyko and Gonçalo Castelo-Branco have been awarded the Göran Gustafsson Prize 2021. The prize is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and consists of a research grant of SEK 5.1 million each, spread over three years, with a personal prize of SEK 250,000.

The Kamprad Family Foundation for Entrepreneurship, Research & Charity decided this year to distribute SEK 164 million in research grants to projects to improve the quality of life of older people.

Swedish Foundations' Starting Grant 2020 is awarded to KI researcher, Carl Sellgren Majkowitz for his research in schizophrenia.

For her research in HIV vaccine and design, professor Gunilla Karlsson Hedestam at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology receives 1.8 million US dollar, multidisciplinary, long-term research program (P01) grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The Jussi Taipale Group is part of the 5-year research project whose goal is to discover novel diagnostic tools and effective drug combinations based on data from high-grade serous ovarian cancer patients. The project with 14 international and multidisciplinary partners will be coordinated from the University of Helsinki and has a total budget of 15 million Euros. 

KI is participating in a new EU project about using Real World Data (RWD) to improve post treatment in breast cancer, as well as shaping guidelines and best practices for researchers, public health and regulatory bodies throughout Europe to facilitate wider adaption of RWD in research and clinical practice.

The StratNeuro board has reviewed the neuroscience submissions to the SLL call “kliniska forskare” (2020) and decided to support the two researchers at Karolinska Institutet with SEK 500,000 each.

StratNeuro has awarded SEK 1,000,000 in start-up grant to Maya Ketzef receiving a 2020 VR 'starting grant and Sara Garcia-Ptacek receiving a 2020 faculty-funded Assistant Professor position.

Congratulations to Peter Zaphiropoulos, at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, who received 1 million SEK in project grants from the Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation 2020 for a project on Circular RNA in medulloblastoma.

KI researcher Professor Lars Terenius, in collaboration with two US groups, has been awarded a 5-year Prime Project Grant of 2.8 million US dollars from The National Institutes of Health, USA, to study how selected drugs affect the dynamics of opioid systems in Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD).

Two researchers at KI have been granted funding from the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg foundation with about 6 million SEK. The Foundation supports research in Social Sciences.

We wish to congratulate Victoria Menéndez-Benito at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, who has been awarded a two-year Strategic Mobility Grant from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). This grant aims to increase personal mobility, knowledge transfer, and cross-fertilization between academia and industry.

Three researchers from Karolinska Institutet have been awarded grants from the Sjöberg Foundation, in total a sum of SEK 12 million. The foundation supports research with a focus on cancer, health and the environment.

Carin Lennartsson has been granted funding to collect data and research materials linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project is entitled “The Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old – SWEOLD COVID-19”.

Rosaria Galanti receives NOK 10 million from NordForsk. The grant is awarded for collaborative projects between Nordic and Baltic Countries concerning clinical and public health aspects of COVID-19, especially in combination with the use of tobacco such as smoking and snus.

Researchers at KI have received SEK 36,800,000 from the Swedish Research Council’s consolidator grant 2020. In total, SEK 217 million was distributed to 20 universities.

Samir El Andaloussi, researcher at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, has been awarded the 2020 European Research Council Consolidator Grant for the project “Release of engineered Extracellular vesicles for delivery of Biotherapeutics”.

Gilberto Fisone has been awarded a three-year research grant from the Swedish Research Council within the program Novel Imaging and Brain Stimulation Methods and Technologies (JPND) for a project entitled "Phage-based targeted neural stimulation in neurodegenerative diseases".

Karolinska Institutet have been awarded a grant of SEK 290 million from the Swedish Cancer Society. NVS researchers Maria Hagströmer and Linda Björkhem-Bergman are among the recipients.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded a grant of SEK 290 million from the Swedish Cancer Society, meaning that over one third of the total grant of SEK 709 million, divided amongst eleven universities, is going to cancer research at KI. Two of the recipients are associate professor Mattias Rantalainen and Professor Fang Fang.

The Swedish cancer society has on November 11th awarded 709 million SEK to cancer research in Sweden. Among them were ten researchers from the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition (BioNut) at KI, who were granted a total of 45.2 million SEK. The grants cover the years 2021- 2023.
