Goldman\, University of Copenhagen/University of RochesterGoldman lab Rochester&amp\;nbsp\;Center for Translational Neuromedicine\, Copenhagen\r\n\r\nSteven A. Goldman is Professor of Neuroscience and Neurology at the University of Copenhagen\, where he is Co-Director of its Center for Basic and Translational Neuroscience\, and a consultant at Copenhagen University Hospital. He has a secondary appointment at the University of Rochester in the US\, where he is the URMC Distinguished Professor and Co-Director of its Center for Translational Neuromedicine. He moved to Copenhagen in 2014 from Rochester\, having received the Novo Nordisk Laureate Award from the Novo Nordisk Fondation in Denmark. He was recruited to Copenhagen to establish its new Center in Basic and Translational Neuroscience. Goldman is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania\, with BA degrees in Biology and Psychology. He obtained his PhD with Fernando Nottebohm at the Rockefeller University in 1983\, and his MD from Cornell in 1984. Goldman interned in Medicine (1984-85) and did his residency in Neurology (1985-88) at New York Hospital-Cornell and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1988\, and became a tenured Professor in 1997\, at age 39\; he is board certified in neurology and neuro-oncology. He moved to Rochester in 2003.Currently\, his laboratory seeks to use neural precursor cells to repair the damaged or dysfunctional brain and spinal cord. In previous studies\, he and his colleagues discovered that the human forebrain harbors persistent neural progenitor cells\, in both the ventricular epithelium and brain parenchyma. They have since identified discrete neurotrophic agents that act upon these adult neuronal and oligodendroglial progenitor cells to yield their expansion and differentiation. Among the studies he is collaborating on is one that would be the first transplantation of native progenitor cells into the damaged central nervous system (CNS). If successful\, these studies should provide a firm foundation for clinical trials of neural stem cell-based therapy. Goldman&#039\;s lab is also attempting to better define the cell types and molecules involved in cell migration in adult brain tissue. Only by better understanding this process will it be possible to modulate the destinations of implanted or induced brain cells. The seminar will take place on Wednesday\, August 26th\, at 14:00 in Ragnar Granit (Biomedicum\, Campus Solna).\r\n\r\n\r\nTitle: &quot\;Sympathetic circuits in Obesity&quot\;&amp\;nbsp\;\r\n\r\nAbout the speaker&amp\;nbsp\;Ana Domingos\, MD PhD\, is a Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Oxford\, where she investigates the neural mechanisms that regulate obesity\, with a particular focus on sympathetic neural circuits controlling metabolism. She graduated in Mathematics and Medicine\, and she completed her PhD with Leslie Vosshall and postdoctoral training with Jeffrey Friedman\, both at Rockefeller University\, studying sensory and metabolic control of feeding.Her laboratory has made pioneering contributions to the neurobiology of adipose tissue\, including the identification of sympathetic neurons as key regulators of fat burning and components of the leptin negative feedback circuit (Cell\, 2015). Her team has since uncovered mechanisms by which sympathetic neurons\, immune cells\, and stromal cells coordinate adipose tissue function\, revealing sympathetic neuron-associated macrophages (Nature Medicine\, 2017)\, stromal–ILC2 interactions (Nature\, 2021)\, leptin-sensing perineurial cells (Immunity\, 2023\, Nature Metabolism 2026)\, and how sympathetic-derived neuropeptide Y signaling controls thermogenic adipocyte progenitors (Nature\, 2024). Her group also established the concept of peripherally acting &quot\;sympathofacilitator&quot\; drugs that promote energy expenditure without cardiac or central nervous system side effects (Cell Metabolism\, 2020).&amp\;nbsp\;Ana Domingos is an EMBO Member\, Editor-in-Chief of AJP-Endocrinology and Metabolism\, and is on the advisory board of Cell Metabolism. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the StratNeuro/Wenner-Gren Guest Lecture: "Neural circuits and population dynamics controlling innate social behaviors and their associated internal states" with Professor David J. Anderson (Caltech\, USA). The lecture will take place on Thursday\, September 24th\, at 14:00 in the Lecture Hall Peter Reichard\, Biomedicum (Campus Solna).\r\n\r\n\r\nTitle: &quot\;Neural circuits and population dynamics controlling innate social behaviors and their associated internal states&quot\;&amp\;nbsp\;Innate survival behaviors such as fighting\, mating and predator defense are associated with affective or emotion states. Finding neural representations of such states using supervised analyses is challenging due to a lack of direct state measures. To overcome this limitation\, we have performed unsupervised modeling of single-trial neural data acquired during naturalistic social behaviors\, using recurrent Switching Linear Dynamical Systems (rSLDS). rSLDS learns a dynamics matrix based on latent factor activity in a state-space approximated by a set of linear substates\, yielding a probabilistic model of neural dynamics. When used to model single-trial calcium imaging data recorded from hypothalamic “attack” neurons during aggressive encounters\, rSLDS discovered an approximate line attractor that represents the intensity and duration of a scalable and persistent state of aggressiveness. I will discuss features of this representation\, evidence for its local instantiation in the hypothalamus\, mechanistic implementation and generalization to other social behaviors. Together\, these results extend the potential role of line attractor dynamics beyond the representation of cognitive variables\, to the representation of affective internal states. They also identify a tractable experimental platform to investigate how circuit-level mechanisms give rise to emergent network dynamics at the manifold level in the mammalian brain.\r\n\r\nAbout the speaker&amp\;nbsp\;David J. Anderson has been a member of the faculty in the Division of Biology and Biological Engineering at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena since 1986. He is currently the Director of the TianQiao and Chrissy Chen Institute for Neuroscience at Caltech\, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Anderson received his AB from Harvard College in 1978\, did his PhD training with the late Günter Blobel\, a Nobel Laureate at The Rockefeller University\, and his postdoctoral work with Richard Axel\, a Nobel Laureate at Columbia. He is an alumnus of the 1979 MBL Neurobiology Course. Dr. Anderson&#039\;s research career has spanned multiple topics in neuroscience\, from the study of neural crest stem cells that generate the developing peripheral nervous system\, to the neural circuits that mediate innate emotional behaviors\, such as fear and aggression.&amp\;nbsp\;Dr. Anderson has published over 225 primary research articles and is the co-author with Caltech colleague Ralph Adolphs of The Neuroscience of Emotion: a New Synthesis (2018\, Princeton University Press). Dr. Anderson has trained over 50 PhD students or postdoctoral fellows. He received the W. Alden Spencer Award in Neurobiology from Columbia University in 1999\, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2002)\, the US National Academy of Sciences (2007)\, and is a recipient of the 2017 Perl-UNC Neuroscience Prize and the 2018 Edward M. Scolnick Prize in Neuroscience from MIT. Dr. Anderson played a key role as an adviser to the late Paul Allen in the founding of the Allen Institute for Brain Sciences and the creation of the Allen Brain Atlas\, and continues to serve as an adviser to that Institute. He has also served on two working groups for the NIH&#039\;s BRAIN (Brain Research through Advancing Innovation in Neurotechnology) Initiative.Dr. Anderson has engaged in the public communication of science through several channels. He published an OpEd in the New York Times\, The Alchemy of Stem Cell Research (July 15\, 2001)\, has delivered a TEDx talk (&quot\;Your Brain is More than a Bag of Chemicals\, &quot\; 2013) which has received almost 1.5 million views\, has appeared on NPRs TED Radio Hour to discuss the talk\, the National Edition of NPRs All Things Considered with Jon Hamilton (2019)\, and two episodes of Charlie Rose&#039\;s Brain Series hosted by Nobel Laureate Eric Kandel. DESCRIPTION:The Conference “Developing Brains” will gather for the 13th time leading scientists to discuss how the immense complexity of the brain arises. Knowing how intricate brain structures are assembled gives not only crucial knowledge about the function of our bodies\, but also how some of most common diseases arise.\r\n\r\nMany overarching questions regarding how these brain structures arise and function remain unanswered. For instance\, how can a single cell give rise to complex structures such as the central nervous system (brain/spinal cord) and peripheral and enteric nervous systems\, which include the brain in the gut? The Conference “Developing Brains” will gather international and national leading scientists with expertise in these areas at Karolinska Institutet.
