DESCRIPTION:This is an initiative to promote the internationalisation of Doctoral educational programmes at Karolinska Institutet (KI)\, Doctoral Programme in Health Care Science (PUF-V)\, and the University of Zürich (UZH)\, PhD Programme in Care and Rehabilitation Sciences.\r\n\r\nBackground:For Doctoral students\, it is fundamental to improve their reading skills and gain practice in critiquing and appraising research. One common method to enhance skills in interpreting research results and evaluating research designs is participating in journal clubs. Virtual journal clubs can be a safe space where Doctoral students can also improve their presentation and communication skills and expand their professional network. The club may serve to connect researchers and students\, which is particularly beneficial for those practitioners who have few local peers. Connecting with peers globally via online journal clubs is a natural in today’s world of medical and health care education\, which will accelerate knowledge transfer and become an increasingly important tool in continuing medical education and research.&amp\;nbsp\;Aim:To promote the&amp\;nbsp\;development of critical appraisal skills among Doctoral students and the ability to articulate these accurately\, coveringGeographically different research practices and topics.Quantitative / qualitative / mixed-methods empirical study designs.Useful insights for own research activities and competencies as a scholar.&amp\;nbsp\;Methodology:A group of Doctoral students will meet virtually via Zoom to discuss articles from the health and rehabilitation science literature\, their study designs and choice of methods (quantitative / qualitative / mixed-methods)\, and their interpretation of results under the guidance of senior researchers (activity leaders). The virtual format provides a safe learning environment and allows Doctoral students to engage with each other locally as well as abroad. One predefined article will be discussed per meeting\, which all participants are required to read and study in detail beforehand. To inspire the exchange\, one of the participating Doctoral students (or a group depending on the number of participants) will be assigned to present their view of the article at the beginning of each meeting using prepared slides (approx. 12 minutes). A maximum of two slides may be dedicated to summarizing the article (background\, methods\, results\, conclusions made by the authors)\, while the main focus (minimum of three slides) must lie on the students’ own thought process on the “discussion points” listed below pertaining to the article’s method\, validity\, interpretation and limitations. Factual criticism is encouraged. The activity leaders will then add further methodological discussion points\, followed by in-depth breakout group discussions during which every participant is required to share their thought process. Each meeting concludes with a plenary discussion in which members of each breakout group convey the most important insights from their breakout group discussion.Preparation and research articles to be discussed:Participating Doctoral students have the opportunity to propose a published original empirical research article of interest by e-mail to the activity leaders. Articles must concern the field of public (global) health\, health care in general\, medicine\, caring sciences\, nursing\, midwifery\, physio- or occupational therapy or rehabilitation sciences. To balance the content of the course\, and since there may be more suggestions than there will be meetings\, there is unfortunately no guarantee that a suggested article will be chosen for discussion. The course schedule including presentation dates and the chosen articles will be made available to all participants at the latest two weeks before the first meeting. All Doctoral students are asked to study the scheduled articles / manuscripts in depth before the respective sessions\, using the discussion points below\, so that an informed learning discussion can take place. Active contribution to the discussion in each session is expected.Discussion points:Is the research question and setting clearly stated?Which methodological requirements does the research question imply? Was the study design well-chosen or could another design have better answered the research question as stated in the article? Is the sampling procedure clear and for which population are the results therefore generalizable? Is this accurately stated in the article? How were constructs operationalized for a valid data collection? Are the quantitative statistical tests\, the qualitative data analyses\, or integration / triangulation methods clearly described so that they can be replicated? Is the reporting of results clear? Was their interpretation done scientifically correctly and to the point?Does the conclusion relate closely to the research question? Were strengths and limitations discussed appropriately? Should others have been added? Are any policy implications suggested in the article direct derivations from the evidence the study generated?&amp\;nbsp\;&amp\;nbsp\;Activity leaders:The activity leaders for the virtual journal club for the academic year 2025/2026 are Myrta Kohler\, PhD\, and Marco Riguzzi\, PhD\, who are senior researchers from the&amp\;nbsp\;University of Zürich (UZH). They will provide guidelines for the articles being reviewed and for what is expected of the presenters and the attendees of each meeting. They will host the meetings and ensure a safe and respectful learning atmosphere.Participants:Six to eight Doctoral students from&amp\;nbsp\;Karolinska Institutet (KI)&amp\;nbsp\;and the&amp\;nbsp\;University of Zürich (UZH).Dates and Time:Dates: 25 September\, 23 October\, 04 December\, 26 February\, 26 March\, 23 April 2025 (Thursdays).Time: 16:15-17:15.Criteria:Successful participation in the Journal Club is graded pass/fail based on the individual presentation and active contribution to the discussion in each session. Virtual participation is mandatory\, although one justified absence is permitted. Virtual participation requires a stationary computer / laptop with a stable high-speed internet connection and a functional camera and microphone that are always turned on for the duration of each meeting. Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are not allowed. Neither is participation while travelling.Registration:If you are interested to participate\, please contact puf-v@ki.se to see if there are any spots available.&amp\;nbsp\;Please register by 28 August 2025. Doctoral students are required to provide confirmation that their thesis supervisor is aware of and agrees to their participation in the course. Once registered\, there is a period of one week until 04 September 2025 during which deregistration is possible\, but no new registration is possible any more. After that date\, participation is mandatory for registered Doctoral students.&amp\;nbsp\;For questions related to the registration or participation requirements / regulations\, please contact&amp\;nbsp\;puf-v@ki.se.For questions related to the activity itself\, please contact the activity leaders\, Marco Riguzzi\,&amp\;nbsp\;marco.riguzzi@uzh.ch\, and Myrta Kohler\,&amp\;nbsp\;myrta.kohler@uzh.ch.&amp\;nbsp\;\r\n\r\nPlease note that location\, time and information can be updated on the website.\r\nhttps://news.ki.se/calendar/joint-virtual-journal-club-for-phd-students-in-english

DESCRIPTION:The concept of the stem cell niche (microenvironment) has been proposed many decades ago\, and the pivotal role of niche in controlling stem cells has been documented. However\, the debate over if different niches exist to control hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) priming has been ongoing. Our new discoveries unrevealed a ‘zone’ concept that challenge the single-cell niche dogma defined previously.\r\n\r\nProfessor Linheng Li is a prominent scientist specializing in stem cell biology\, particularly in the areas of adult stem cells and their microenvironments or niches. He is an investigator at Stowers Institute for Medical Research\, Kansas City and Professor\, Adjunction with Kansas University of Cancer Center\, Kansas City\, USA.Tumor-initiating stem cells (TSCs or CSCs) lie at the root of tumor/cancer and are largely responsible for drug resistance and cancer relapse. However\, how the therapy resistant CSCs survive remains a fundamental biological question and clinically unsolved problem. &amp\;nbsp\;We reported that CSCs can intrinsically escape immune attacking and at the same time can also shape their microenvironment into an immunosuppressive barrier. Overcoming both the extrinsic immunosuppressive barrier and intrinsic immune escape has the potential to increase the efficacy of checkpoint inhibition therapies against various cancers.Lecture: &quot\;Microenvironmental Regulation of Normal and Cancerous Stem Cells&quot\;Introduction by KI researcher Hong Qian\, Professor at the Department of Medicine Huddinge:&quot\;Therapeutic opportunities in leukemia niche&quot\;The lecture will be followed by an afternoon reception in the Neo entrance hall with possibility to interact and ask questions.&amp\;nbsp\;Early Career Researchers (e.g. PhD students\, postdocs\, assistant professors) interested in an exclusive opportunity to engage in discussions regarding career advice with Professor Li at 13:00 before the lecture\, pls. contact hong.qian@ki.se no later than Monday\, September 8th.&amp\;nbsp\;Host:&amp\;nbsp\;Hong Qian\r\n\r\nPlease note that location\, time and information can be updated on the website.\r\nhttps://news.ki.se/calendar/ki-south-distinguished-lecture-series-linheng-li

DESCRIPTION:Doctoral students struggling with statistics\, don't miss this! Join a unique digital workshop series with Associate Professor Per Palmgren\, starting 25/11\, held in English. This series\, organized within PUF-V\, complements established statistics courses\, targeting those seeking a more conceptual\, applied understanding of the subject. Ideal for students with basic statistics knowledge\, it offers an in-depth\, accessible exploration of challenging concepts.\r\n\r\nAim of the workshopThe workshop series is aimed at doctoral students who find statistics difficult\, and the aim is to:create the opportunity to develop basic knowledge in statistics to be able to carry out common statistical analyses.develop the skills required to carry out relevant analyzes using the statistical software JASP (open-source software from the University of Amsterdam).be able to adequately interpret the results.\r\n\r\nLearning outcomes of the activityAfter completing the workshop series\, the doctoral student should be able to:discuss common statistical concepts and explain their meaning\,choose appropriate descriptive statistics and graphical presentation of results\,understand the meaning of and be able to perform hypothesis testing\,choose the appropriate statistical inferential method based on test assumptions as well as variable and scale types\, andperform common statistical calculations in JASP software.ContentIn the workshop series we take a conceptual and applied approach in the statistics program JASP.The workshop series is divided into five modules:1.&amp\;nbsp\;Being able to &quot\;see&quot\; my data&amp\;nbsp\;- descriptive statistics and data integrity. In this module\, data import\, coding\, and usual descriptive statistics as well as exploratory data analysis regarding basic statistical assumptions are trained.2.&amp\;nbsp\;To investigate differences with a focus on the T. During the module we practice using three types of t-tests: one-tailed t-test\, independent t-test and paired t-test.3.&amp\;nbsp\;When two becomes more. In this third module\, ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA are dealt with\, as they are the natural continuation of t-tests and allow for the comparison of differences in group means.4.&amp\;nbsp\;To investigate relationships and to be able to predict.&amp\;nbsp\;Within this module we practice exploring correlations and performing simple and multiple linear regression\, as well as logistic regression.5.&amp\;nbsp\;When we don&#039\;t have means. In this final module\, we focus on developing skills to apply non-parametric statistical methods\, including the Mann-Whitney U test\, Wilcoxon signed-rank test\, Kruskal-Wallis test\, and the chi-squared testTeaching and learning activitiesThe workshop series employ a &quot\;blended learning&quot\; approach nature the participant first independently takes part in a pre-recorded video lecture to establish a common basis and which is then followed by five digital on-line labs in a workshop format. For participation\, you must download the statistics program JASP (open-source program from the University of Amsterdam) before the meetings. The JASP program is available via KI&#039\;s Software Center.DatesDuring the workshop series\, the participants meet digitally via Zoom seven occasion between 09:00-12:00.24/11 – 09.00-12.0025/11 – 09.00-12.0026/11 – 09-00-12.0027/11 - 09.00-12.0028/11 - 09.00-12\,001/12 - 09.00-12.002/12 – 09.00-12.00The workshop series is better suited for doctoral students who already have little prior understanding of the subject by\, for example\, having completed a basic course in statistics. It is desirable to participate in all five modules. The workshop series is NOT suitable for those students who find the basics boring\, want equations and/or the mathematical explanations. The series is held in English with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 doctoral students and is led by Associate Professor Per Palmgren from the department of learning\, informatics\, management and ethics (LIME).Register here&amp\;nbsp\;If there is more than 20 applicants\, doctoral students will be prioritized.\r\n\r\nPlease note that location\, time and information can be updated on the website.\r\nhttps://news.ki.se/calendar/i-think-statistics-is-difficult-a-workshop-series-for-you-who-are-struggling-with-understanding-statistics-ht25-eng

DESCRIPTION:As academics\, we spend a lot of time focusing on the content of our work\, but sometimes we forget to pay attention to the work process\, or how we work\, think and act. However\, the process is important to finish our projects on time and manage our stress levels.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis workshop shifts the focus from the what to the how\,&amp\;nbsp\;or from the content of your work to the work process. It gives you strategies and practical&amp\;nbsp\;techniques to finish your&amp\;nbsp\;academic work on time and feel good along the way. You will learn about&amp\;nbsp\;units\, the weekly schedule and the 80/20 principle and apply these tools to your own work&amp\;nbsp\;situation). You thus get a toolbox for increased academic effectiveness that many PhD students and post docs&amp\;nbsp\;have applied successfully to their own academic work. The toolbox consists of research-based&amp\;nbsp\;approaches and proven techniques.\r\n\r\nTarget groupPhD students and postdoctoral researchersAbout the workshop-leaderÅsa Burman is the founder of Finish On Time and author of the book The Doctoral Student Handbook: Master Effectiveness\, Reduce Stress and Finish on Time.
