DESCRIPTION:The concept of the stem cell niche (microenvironment) has been proposed many decades ago\, and the pivotal role of niche in controlling stem cells has been documented. However\, the debate over if different niches exist to control hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) priming has been ongoing. Our new discoveries unrevealed a ‘zone’ concept that challenge the single-cell niche dogma defined previously.\r\n\r\nProfessor Linheng Li is a prominent scientist specializing in stem cell biology\, particularly in the areas of adult stem cells and their microenvironments or niches. He is an investigator at Stowers Institute for Medical Research\, Kansas City and Professor\, Adjunction with Kansas University of Cancer Center\, Kansas City\, USA.Tumor-initiating stem cells (TSCs or CSCs) lie at the root of tumor/cancer and are largely responsible for drug resistance and cancer relapse. However\, how the therapy resistant CSCs survive remains a fundamental biological question and clinically unsolved problem. &amp\;nbsp\;We reported that CSCs can intrinsically escape immune attacking and at the same time can also shape their microenvironment into an immunosuppressive barrier. Overcoming both the extrinsic immunosuppressive barrier and intrinsic immune escape has the potential to increase the efficacy of checkpoint inhibition therapies against various cancers.Lecture: &quot\;Microenvironmental Regulation of Normal and Cancerous Stem Cells&quot\;Introduction by KI researcher Hong Qian\, Professor at the Department of Medicine Huddinge:&quot\;Therapeutic opportunities in leukemia niche&quot\;The lecture will be followed by an afternoon reception in the Neo entrance hall with possibility to interact and ask questions.&amp\;nbsp\;Early Career Researchers (e.g. PhD students\, postdocs\, assistant professors) interested in an exclusive opportunity to engage in discussions regarding career advice with Professor Li at 13:00 before the lecture\, pls. contact hong.qian@ki.se no later than Monday\, September 8th.&amp\;nbsp\;Host:&amp\;nbsp\;Hong Qian\r\n\r\nPlease note that location\, time and information can be updated on the website.\r\nhttps://news.ki.se/calendar/ki-south-distinguished-lecture-series-linheng-li

DESCRIPTION:The research network in medical education invites you to a seminar with Professor Kevin Eva. This seminar will explore how we define and understand quality in health professional education as well as how the field’s diversity of roles\, methods\, and perspectives shapes its research and priorities. \r\n\r\nRegister to the seminar\nhttps://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=8e73v0vPMk--PaHdoEPAXakyJ8Wtox5PmZjvDuBCfoxUQzNaT0oxRjdWNE5URUMwNzU1TUFaU1pKRy4u\r\n\r\nHealth professional education is rife with diversity of roles\, scholarly backgrounds\, methodological approaches\, and conceptual outlooks. That diversity is an essential condition for the field’s current success and continued maturation\, but it simultaneously creates challenges with respect to defining quality in a uniform and productive manner.&amp\;nbsp\;&amp\;nbsp\;This talk will be aimed at doing that by prompting reflection on trends in health professional education research that can enable discussion about how the field’s priorities\, its conception of quality and\, hence\, its scholarship\, have evolved.&amp\;nbsp\;Methodological rigour is important\, but we must recognize that scientific progress has little to do with method. Practical relevance is important\, but we must recognize that context plays such an essential role in education that proof is a flawed concept. In complex domains we are better served by focusing attention on what empirical data are required to improve our thinking about the practical goals with which we struggle\, striving constantly for quality improvement\, rather than trusting that a single correct answer could ever be found. Attendees will\, thus\, be encouraged to embrace the phrase “it depends” and to consider the implications of that outlook for their research\, publication\, and dissemination efforts.Kevin EvaProfessor Kevin Eva is the 2022 winner of KIPRIME and editor of the journal Medical Education. Please read more about professor Kevin Eva.Register for the seminarAn Outlook invitation with details on exact location (room) will be sent out&amp\;nbsp\;to those who have registered though the link on Monday 6 October.&amp\;nbsp\;\r\n\r\nPlease note that location\, time and information can be updated on the website.\r\nhttps://news.ki.se/calendar/welcome-to-a-seminar-with-professor-kevin-eva-on-the-evolution-of-health-professional-education-scholarship

DESCRIPTION:Doctoral students struggling with statistics\, don't miss this! Join a unique digital workshop series with Associate Professor Per Palmgren\, starting 25/11\, held in English. This series\, organized within PUF-V\, complements established statistics courses\, targeting those seeking a more conceptual\, applied understanding of the subject. Ideal for students with basic statistics knowledge\, it offers an in-depth\, accessible exploration of challenging concepts.\r\n\r\nAim of the workshopThe workshop series is aimed at doctoral students who find statistics difficult\, and the aim is to:create the opportunity to develop basic knowledge in statistics to be able to carry out common statistical analyses.develop the skills required to carry out relevant analyzes using the statistical software JASP (open-source software from the University of Amsterdam).be able to adequately interpret the results.\r\n\r\nLearning outcomes of the activityAfter completing the workshop series\, the doctoral student should be able to:discuss common statistical concepts and explain their meaning\,choose appropriate descriptive statistics and graphical presentation of results\,understand the meaning of and be able to perform hypothesis testing\,choose the appropriate statistical inferential method based on test assumptions as well as variable and scale types\, andperform common statistical calculations in JASP software.ContentIn the workshop series we take a conceptual and applied approach in the statistics program JASP.The workshop series is divided into five modules:1.&amp\;nbsp\;Being able to &quot\;see&quot\; my data&amp\;nbsp\;- descriptive statistics and data integrity. In this module\, data import\, coding\, and usual descriptive statistics as well as exploratory data analysis regarding basic statistical assumptions are trained.2.&amp\;nbsp\;To investigate differences with a focus on the T. During the module we practice using three types of t-tests: one-tailed t-test\, independent t-test and paired t-test.3.&amp\;nbsp\;When two becomes more. In this third module\, ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA are dealt with\, as they are the natural continuation of t-tests and allow for the comparison of differences in group means.4.&amp\;nbsp\;To investigate relationships and to be able to predict.&amp\;nbsp\;Within this module we practice exploring correlations and performing simple and multiple linear regression\, as well as logistic regression.5.&amp\;nbsp\;When we don&#039\;t have means. In this final module\, we focus on developing skills to apply non-parametric statistical methods\, including the Mann-Whitney U test\, Wilcoxon signed-rank test\, Kruskal-Wallis test\, and the chi-squared testTeaching and learning activitiesThe workshop series employ a &quot\;blended learning&quot\; approach nature the participant first independently takes part in a pre-recorded video lecture to establish a common basis and which is then followed by five digital on-line labs in a workshop format. For participation\, you must download the statistics program JASP (open-source program from the University of Amsterdam) before the meetings. The JASP program is available via KI&#039\;s Software Center.DatesDuring the workshop series\, the participants meet digitally via Zoom seven occasion between 09:00-12:00.24/11 – 09.00-12.0025/11 – 09.00-12.0026/11 – 09-00-12.0027/11 - 09.00-12.0028/11 - 09.00-12\,001/12 - 09.00-12.002/12 – 09.00-12.00The workshop series is better suited for doctoral students who already have little prior understanding of the subject by\, for example\, having completed a basic course in statistics. It is desirable to participate in all five modules. The workshop series is NOT suitable for those students who find the basics boring\, want equations and/or the mathematical explanations. The series is held in English with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 doctoral students and is led by Associate Professor Per Palmgren from the department of learning\, informatics\, management and ethics (LIME).Register here&amp\;nbsp\;If there is more than 20 applicants\, doctoral students will be prioritized.\r\n\r\nPlease note that location\, time and information can be updated on the website.\r\nhttps://news.ki.se/calendar/i-think-statistics-is-difficult-a-workshop-series-for-you-who-are-struggling-with-understanding-statistics-ht25-eng

DESCRIPTION:As academics\, we spend a lot of time focusing on the content of our work\, but sometimes we forget to pay attention to the work process\, or how we work\, think and act. However\, the process is important to finish our projects on time and manage our stress levels.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis workshop shifts the focus from the what to the how\,&amp\;nbsp\;or from the content of your work to the work process. It gives you strategies and practical&amp\;nbsp\;techniques to finish your&amp\;nbsp\;academic work on time and feel good along the way. You will learn about&amp\;nbsp\;units\, the weekly schedule and the 80/20 principle and apply these tools to your own work&amp\;nbsp\;situation). You thus get a toolbox for increased academic effectiveness that many PhD students and post docs&amp\;nbsp\;have applied successfully to their own academic work.
