We wish to congratulate Luca Jovine, Juha Kere, Janne Johansson and Eckardt Treuter at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, who have been awarded grants from the Swedish Research Council within the area of Medicine and Health as well as the area of Natural and Engineering Sciences for the years 2020-2024.

Professor András Simon of the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) and two fellow researchers in Canada and Switzerland have been awarded a grant of almost SEK 100 million by the European Research Council. The aim of the project, which goes under the acronym Salamandra, is to understand how locomotor functions can be restored after damage to the nervous system.

The Division of Innovative Care Research has been very successful in receiving funding from SFO-V (Strategic Research Area Health Care Science), with four of the seven awarded grants going to the research group.

Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) launches a new research initiative and donates SEK 3.1 billion over 12 years to support data-driven life science and SEK 600 million to extend the existing funding to Science for Life Laboratory and to the Wallenberg Centers for Molecular Medicine. Many new research positions will be established.

The Tobias Foundation grant in 2020 has been awarded to Magnus Tobiasson and Eva Hellström Lindberg, both researchers at Karolinska Institutet. The grant amounts to SEK 10 million over a five-year period. It will support research on early detection of relapse after stem cell transplantation for patients with myelodysplastic syndrome.

KI researchers receive 52 120 000 SEK in Forte's yearly call within the areas of responsibility: health, working life and welfare. The purpose of the call is to allow for analysis of advanced knowledge and to contribute to such knowledge in designated research areas or issues.

Four major research projects at Karolinska Institutet are to receive project grants from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) this year. A total of almost SEK 143 million over a five-year period is to be invested in KI projects on cellular ageing, cerebral decision-making mechanisms, stem-cell fate and antibody-producing cells.

Researchers at KI have received funding from the United States Army for the development of genetic engineering methods to alleviate or cure the disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the most common form of genetic neuromuscular disease in children.

Dr. Ivan Nalvarte, a Senior Researcher at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition (BioNut) at Karolinska Institutet, has been awarded a grant of approximately 1.75 million US dollars for four years, from the National Institute of Health (NIH), USA.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet are taking part in three projects funded as part of the EU’s second major investment in research on the new coronavirus sars-cov-2, COVID-19 and the pandemic. The total research grant for KI amounts to just over SEK 14 million.

The Unit for Bioentrepreneurship (UBE) and the Health Informatics Centre (HIC) at the Department of Learning, Informatics, Management and Ethics, have been granted an EU Innovation Action Grant for the project COVID-X, which aims to contribute to the public health preparedness and response in the context of the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 and to ensure the availability of critical technologies and tools.

Three researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded the 2020 ERC Starting Grant: Niklas Björkström, Janina Seubert and Nils Landegren. Their projects concern resident organ-specific immune cells, the cognitive mechanisms behind our preference of certain foods, and sex-differences in the human immune system and the risk of autoimmune disease. In all, the European Research Council will support 436 early-career researchers with this prestigious grant.

KI-researcher Simon Elsässer, Senior Researcher, is one of fifty-five grantees of the European Research Council (ERC) Proof of Concept funding to explore the commercial or societal potential of their research results.

Sophie Erhardt's research group, at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology Karolinska Institutet, has been awarded a research grant of in total SEK 1,200,000 from The Swedish Brain Foundation.

The StratNeuro board has reviewed the neuroscience submissions to the SLL call “högre kliniska forskare” (2019 and 2020) and decided to support the following researchers with SEK 500,000 each.

StratNeuro has awarded SEK 1,000,000 in start-up grant to each of the following KI recipients of a 2019 VR ‘starting grant’.

Congratulations to Andrea Carmine Belin and Caroline Ran, researchers at the Department of Neuroscience, who have received The Swedish Brain Foundation's Research Grant in 2020, for their project on cluster headache, a neurovascular disease leading to extreme pain and for which there is currently no cure.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet are part of a consortium granted almost 66 million euros (690 million Swedish kronor) by the european Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) and other parties. The funds will be used to develop, test and facilitate access to chemical substances and other research tools that could pave the way for new drug targets and treatments of diseases within areas such as inflammation and cancer.

Researchers at the Medical Management Centre (MMC), Karolinska Institutet, have been granted funding for the research project "The quandary of low value care: health professionals’ decision-making on abandoning ineffective practices". We asked project leader Henna Hasson to tell us a little more about the project.

The research project "Building capacity for implementation within health and welfare organizations – a longitudinal evaluation of methodological support in implementation for working groups" is one of the 14 projects awarded funding from Forte. EU-financed Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) has boosted funding for research on diagnostics, medicines and vaccines against the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Ali Mirazimi, researcher at Karolinska Institutet and Sweden’s National Veterinary Institute (SVA), coordinates one of eight projects provisionally selected among 144 applicants.

Thomas Helleday’s research group has been awarded a prestigious grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the sixth time. The latest ERC Proof of Concept Grant is aimed at the development of new anti-inflammatory drugs for lung diseases such as fibrosis.

The National Board of Health and Welfare annually distributes grants for research aimed at mental illness prevention and treatment of habits of living. This year, the research project “Tobaksavvänjning på recept” (Tobacco Cessation on Prescription) receives 2,3 MSEK.

The ERC Advanced Grant is one of Europe’s most prestigious programmes for research financing. The grant has now been awarded to Ernest Arenas to tailor dopamine-producing brain cells for patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Two clinical researchers at KI have been appointed Wallenberg Clinical Scholars 2020. The individual funding of SEK 15 million from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation provides Anca Catrina and Mikael Rydén with the opportunity to deepen their research and disseminate their results in healthcare.

Professor Ali Mirazimi at Karolinska Institutet is part of a consortium that has received 1 million Canadian dollars (almost 7 million kronor) to try to develop a drug candidate against COVID-19. Mirazimi will assist with in vitro and in vivo infection models for SARS-CoV-2. The project is a collaboration with Canadian and Chinese researchers.

Three coronavirus projects coordinated by researchers at Karolinska Institutet have moved onto the grant negotiation phase in a bid for 9 million euros (95 million kronor) in EU funding. The projects aim to find a vaccine, immunotherapies and neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and are being coordinated by KI’s Matti Sällberg, Qiang Pan Hammarström and Benjamin Murrell.

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, SSF, appointed the seventh generation of "Future research leader", four researchers from Karolinska Institutet. The grant supports young, promising researchers and enable them to build their own successful research groups.

KI researcher Emma Andersson receives Swedish Foundations' Starting Grant 2019 for research in developmental biology.

Two new research programmes focusing on AI and bioelectronic medicine, for application in the areas of breast cancer and inflammatory disease, respectively, have been adopted at MedTechLabs. An interdisciplinary centre run by KTH, Karolinska Institutet and the Stockholm Region.

She receives the grant for ”New diagnostic tools and treatment for Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury and small vascular disease” and it is distributed over three years.

Two KI researchers receive research project grant for international collaboration within rare diseases (EJP Rare diseases) from the Swedish Research Council.

Two researchers at Karolinska Institutet are awarded the Strategic Mobility Grant from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). The aim of the SSF mobility programme is to increase exchange between Swedish universities and industry by funding researchers’ work with a project managed by the other part.

Jakob Wikström at KI is one of this year’s three Wallenberg Clinical Fellows. The purpose of the program is to encourage clinical research by Swedish physicians. The funding is for three years and is provided by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.

Researchers from Karolinska Institutet participate in capacity building projects fincanced by Erasmus+

Four researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been granted a total of SEK 28 million in additional funding from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). Two of these researchers are also promoted from Wallenberg Academy Fellows (WAF) to Wallenberg Scholars.

Myriam Aouadi and Camilla Svensson have been awarded the European Research Council’s Consolidator grant 2019 for research on the role of macrophages in liver disease and how autoantibodies contribute to chronic pain, respectively.

KI researcher Marta Roczniewska has received funding from FORTE for her project "Job crafting interventions − what is required for employees to be able to design and redesign their work?"

Six of the 29 new Wallenberg Academy Fellows appointed in 2019 will conduct their groundbreaking research at Karolinska Institutet. The five-year grant is financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation to provide the young and talented researcher leaders with long-term research funding in Sweden.

The Swedish Research Council has awarded a little more than SEK 46 million to researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in the areas of science and technology; humanities and social sciences; project grants for international collaborations in antimicrobial resistance; and project grants for international collaborations in personalized medicine.

StratNeuro awards a total of 1,6 MSEK to the following Collaborative Neuroscience Pilot Research Projects.

Two research projects at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded synergy grants from the European Research Council (ERC). In total, the researchers and their international partners were awarded about EUR 19 million (SEK 209 million) over a six-year period for studies that aim to widen our understanding of disease-causing fat cells and unlock new cancer treatments.

Altogether SEK 170 million. This is this year's allocation from the European Commission under the funding programme for health in Horizon2020. A total of 20 research projects at Karolinska Institutet are being supported, three of them also coordinated from here: a survey of what we are exposed to in the environment; mapping of the brain's different nerve cells; and a project to bring down the mortality rate in childbirth in four African countries.

Four research projects at Karolinska Institutet receive funding from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) in the project call of 2019. In all, researchers at KI are awarded close to SEK 135 million over a five-year period for studies into MS, mitochondrial disease, and vaccine against rheumatism.

Three grants, of in total 37 MSEK, have been awarded to Karolinska Institutet towards a doctoral programme grant within register-based research and two research environment grants within register-based research. The Swedish Reserach Council awarded in total grants to an amount of 102 MSEK for 2020-2023.

A group of biostatistical scientists at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) have been awarded a research environment grant of SEK 13 million from the Swedish Research Council for research into the development and application of statistical methods for register-based research.
