Jakob Wikström at KI is one of this year’s three Wallenberg Clinical Fellows. The purpose of the program is to encourage clinical research by Swedish physicians. The funding is for three years and is provided by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation.

Four researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been granted a total of SEK 28 million in additional funding from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). Two of these researchers are also promoted from Wallenberg Academy Fellows (WAF) to Wallenberg Scholars.

Myriam Aouadi and Camilla Svensson have been awarded the European Research Council’s Consolidator grant 2019 for research on the role of macrophages in liver disease and how autoantibodies contribute to chronic pain, respectively.

Six of the 29 new Wallenberg Academy Fellows appointed in 2019 will conduct their groundbreaking research at Karolinska Institutet. The five-year grant is financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation to provide the young and talented researcher leaders with long-term research funding in Sweden.

Two research projects at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded synergy grants from the European Research Council (ERC). In total, the researchers and their international partners were awarded about EUR 19 million (SEK 209 million) over a six-year period for studies that aim to widen our understanding of disease-causing fat cells and unlock new cancer treatments.

Altogether SEK 170 million. This is this year's allocation from the European Commission under the funding programme for health in Horizon2020. A total of 20 research projects at Karolinska Institutet are being supported, three of them also coordinated from here: a survey of what we are exposed to in the environment; mapping of the brain's different nerve cells; and a project to bring down the mortality rate in childbirth in four African countries.

Four research projects at Karolinska Institutet receive funding from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) in the project call of 2019. In all, researchers at KI are awarded close to SEK 135 million over a five-year period for studies into MS, mitochondrial disease, and vaccine against rheumatism.

Gonçalo Castelo-Branco is awarded the Anniversary Prize for influencing and inspiring international research on brain development, glial cells and multiple sclerosis. The prize includes an award of SEK 5 million and will be presented in conjunction with the Swedish Society for Medical Research’s 100th anniversary celebration.

The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation's NARSAD Young Investigators Grant was awarded for the first time in 1987.

Two researchers at Karolinska Institutet, Per-Olof Berggren and Birgitta Henriques-Normark, receive a total of SEK 68 million in grants from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, SSF. The Med-X research program is an interdisciplinary initiative in medicine and technical science. The purpose is to provide new solutions for clinical needs.

Three researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded the ERC Starting Grant 2019: Jenny Mjösberg, Maria Genander, and newly recruited Pia Dosenovic. Their projects concern inflammatory bowel disease, esophageal cancers, and HIV vaccine, respectively. In all, the ERC will support 408 early-career researchers from around the world with its prestigious starting grant this year.

Sten Linnarsson, professor of molecular systems biology at Karolinska Institutet, is trying to understand the development of the human brain. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is now giving him this year’s Torsten Söderberg Academy Professorial Chair in Medicine for his work in achieving a detailed map of the human brain. The grant consists of SEK ten million over a five-year period.

The National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) has distributed 2 MSEK during 2019 to support a collaborative project between Karolinska Institutet and Region Stockholm.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) is the collective name for the European Commission's program aimed at researchers' career development. Karolinska Institutet has now been selected as host organisation for 6 new individual fellowships within the MSCA, with a total funding of SEK 12.6 million (EUR 1.2 million).

The ERC Advanced Grant is one of the most prestigious funding programmes for research in Europe. Per-Olof Berggren, professor of experimental endocrinology at Karolinska Institutet, is now awarded this grant for the second time.

Three researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been appointed Wallenberg Scholar in 2019: Ernest Arenas, Sten Linnarsson, and Randal S. Johnson. The researchers – among the foremost in their field in Sweden – receive SEK 18 million each from the Wallenberg Foundations in the form of a five-year grant for free research.

Professor Sven-Erik Dahlén, IMM, participates in the co-ordination team of the IMI project 3TR that was recently approved for funding by the European Commission.

The EU agency GenderNet recently decided on grants for 13 international collaborations. Five of these projects have partners at KI. In total about SEK 16.6 million is granted to KI. The projects include sex-and-gender perspective in their respective subject areas.

Eight projects at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded the recently established KI Engagement Grants, which aim to help KI researchers get started along a path to societal impact. These grants are part of an internal ‘impact and outreach’ effort approved by KI President Ole Petter Ottersen.

Two researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded the ERC Advanced Grant (AdG) 2017 from the European Research Council. The two researchers who receive this prestigious award are Henrik Ehrsson and Gunilla Karlsson Hedestam. In total, the ERC allocates funding to 269 European research projects, which is about 12% of all applicants.

This year, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW), one of Sweden’s largest funders of research, celebrates 100 years. Festivities include a joint jubilee symposium arranged by KI, KTH and the University of Stockholm in the Aula Magna on 15 September. One of the invited speakers is KI researcher Marie Carlén.

Three researchers at Karolinska Institutet have been awarded the ERC Advanced Grant 2016 from the European Research Council. The three researchers who receive this prestigious award are Kenneth Chien, Patrik Ernfors, and Magnus Ingelman-Sundberg.

Four researchers at KI will receive grants from Johnson & Johnson Innovation, committed up to the next 2–3 years. The purpose is to identify and support high quality, innovative research that has the potential to provide new healthcare solutions.

Vicente Pelechano Garcia at the Department of Microbiology, Tumour and Cell Biology is one of two researchers to be awarded a Swedish Foundations’ Starting Grant. The grant is arranged jointly by five private research foundations and is awarded to young research group leaders who achieved a top grade and proceeded to the interview stage of their ERC Starting Grant application but did not make it all the way.

Seven young researchers connected to Karolinska Institutet have been appointed Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2016. The purpose of this program, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is to boost Sweden as a research nation by retaining the greatest research talents in the country and by recruiting young international researchers to Swedish universities.

The European Research Council (ERC) has announced the winners of its prestigious ERC Advanced Grants 2015. Among a total of nine grantees from Swedish universities, four are researchers from Karolinska Institutet: Jonas Frisén, Thomas Helleday, Ole Kiehn and Klas Wiman.
