Jorge Ruas, Associate Professor at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet, is the recipient of The Leif C. Groop award for outstanding diabetes research for his work on muscle and exercise physiology and critical signalling pathways in skeletal muscle, liver and fat tissue.

Obesity and reduced insulin sensitivity are common in polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS. New research based on animal studies, and to be published in the journal PNAS, reveals that the hormone adiponectin can protect against these changes.

Investigators at Karolinska Institutet have identified a potential therapeutic target for treatment of obesity-associated metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and nonalcoholic hepatic steatosis. The work, performed in collaboration with scientists at the University of California, Berkeley and Danderyd Hospital, is published in Cell Reports.
