Christer Betsholtz, professor at the Department of Medicine Huddinge, Karolinska Institutet, has been awarded the major Nordic Prize for 2021 by the Eric K. Fernström Foundation. He receives one million SEK for his research into blood-vessel cells and their vascular structure and function.

The Department of Dental Medicine congratulates Mirjam Majster on the NOF Hatton award. She was awarded the prize at the CED-IADR / NOF Oral health congress 2021.

Professor Juleen R. Zierath receives the 2021 prestigious EASD Claude Bernard Award. This award recognizes an individual’s innovative leadership and lifetime achievements in diabetes research and is the EASD’s highest award.

Malin Nygren-Bonnier, docent and senior lecturer at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hosptial has been awarded Physiotherapist of the Year 2021, by the Swedish Association of Physiotherapists. She is honored for her work with rehabilitation after COVID-19.

This year’s Grand Silver Medals are awarded to professors Gunnar Grant and Rune Toftgård. The medal recognises excellence in support of Karolinska Institutet and is awarded during the installation ceremony in Aula Medica on October 14.

The award recognises Professor Kivipelto’s more than 20 years of research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia.

KI researcher Federico Iovino has been awarded the Bjarne Ahlström's Minnesfonds pris 2020 (Bjarne Ahlström’s Memorial Fund Prize 2020) for his research in Clinical Neurology and on the study of inflammatory mechanisms that affect the function of the central or peripheral nervous system. The prize which consists of SEK 1000,000 is awarded annually and is distributed partly as an individual prize of SEK 50,000, partly as a research grant of SEK 950,000.

Karolinska Institutet’s Grand Silver Medal 2020 is awarded to Ove Hagelin, Richard J. Heald, Hans Jörnvall, Lars Olson and Nancy Pedersen. The award has been conferred on them in special recognition of their significant contributions to medical research in general and Karolinska Institutet in particular.

Dr. Glenn Regehr is awarded the 2020 Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education (KIPRIME.) Dr. Regehr of University of British Columbia, Vancouver (UBC), whose work has improved the educational and scholarly practices in health professions education, will be the tenth winner of this prestigious and coveted award.

Common respiratory bacteria carried in the nose by healthy children, can sometimes cause life-threatening infections. Birgitta Henriques Normark, Professor at the Department of Microbiology, Tumour and Cell Biology, is investigating why this occurs. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has now awarded her the Torsten Söderberg Academy Professorial Chair in Medicine – a SEK 10 million grant over a period of five years.

Four researchers are awarded Karolinska Institutet’s Grand Silver Medal 2019. They are given the medal for their great contributions to support KI’s activities.
