Prof. Silke Appel is the Head of Research at the Department of Clinical Science, as well as the Acting Head of Broegelmann Research Laboratory, University of Bergen. She received a master (diploma) in biology (1997) and a PhD (Dr. rer. nat.; 2001) at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. In 2005, she moved to Bergen, Norway and started to work on Sjögren’s syndrome, with main focus on dendritic cells at Broegelmann Research Laboratory. Since 2012 she has become a full professor at the Broegelmann Research Laboratory, Department of Clinical Science. Her research is mainly focused on dendritic cell biology with special emphasis on aspects that enable their use in immunotherapeutic strategies, both for cancer and autoimmune diseases.
